Rep. Mark Sanford often talks about his Christian beliefs, so I was surprised by this Sept. 11 quote from him, “I’m not a Buddhist.” I doubt that many people thought he was, but he felt the need to respond to the rumor. Sanford added that he meant no offense to Buddhism and has “an appreciation for every faith around the world.” Had someone called Sanford an atheist, I wonder if his denial would have included his appreciation for atheists. We are a country of all faiths and none. Atheists do not ask for special rights, but we are a growing minority who deserve no less respect than do people of faith.
